Valentines Chocolate Cake

Ingredients:
- Chocolate Cake
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups sugar
½ cup cocoa powder
1½ teaspoons baking powder
1½ teaspoons baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
2 large eggs
½ cup vegetable oil
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 cup hot coffee
- Chocolate Buttercream
¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
3 cups powdered sugar
¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
Pinch of salt
½ tablespoon vanilla extract
1-2 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
SweetHeart Candy (for decoration)
Instructions:
- Chocolate Cake
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan or a 9-inch heart cake pan. I used this one.
- In a small bowl, mix together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a separate large bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, oil, and vanilla extract, then add the dry ingredients. Mix until well combined.
- Stir in the hot coffee until the batter is smooth (it will be thin).
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pan.
- For a perfectly even layer use Fabric Cake Strips (these are one of the fabric strips sold in stores but the truth is I made mine with an old cotton t-shirt that I cut up, it works just the same). Just dampen the fabric strips with water and wrap them securely around the cake pan.
- Bake for 35-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Chocolate Buttercream
- In a large bowl, beat softened butter until smooth.
- Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing until combined.
- Mix in salt, vanilla extract, and heavy cream until frosting is smooth and creamy.
- If the frosting is too thick, add more heavy cream, 1 tbsp at a time, until desired consistency is reached.
- Once the cake is completely cooled, frost with the chocolate buttercream.
- Place the sweetheart candies on top in the pattern of your choice, Enjoy!
